As a child, there are only a few moments in life more special than your birthday.

I can remember counting down the months, days, hours, even minutes until my next birthday. There's just something so magical about having all of your friends and family in once place and feeling their unconditional love. (The presents don't hurt, either.) But for one little girl in Boston, her ninth birthday will haunt her for the rest of her life.

A nine-year-old girl is in the hospital after being shot in the back at a Roxbury playground early Sunday morning.

The girl and her loved ones were all gathered together to celebrate her birthday. The festivities lasted well into the wee hours of the morning.

At approximately 1 a.m., the girl was shot in the back. She was soon rushed to a local hospital.

After undergoing emergency surgery, the little girl is expected to make a full recovery.

Police are still investigating the shooting. No arrests have been made as of this writing.

Unfortunately, this isn't the first shooting that Roxbury has seen. Just last year, a 17-year-old boy was shot at the very same playground, which happens to be located less than a block away from Boston police headquarters.

It's incredibly disheartening that one little girl's birthday was ruined because of unnecessary gun violence.
