It's no secret that couples need some alone time and that alone time's usually at a premium when kids are involved.

Being a single mother and raising your kids while trying to take on dating is no small feat, either. And that's because most parents put their child's needs before their own. For one English mother, however, her needs were way more important than the wellbeing of her own child. What she did to her young daughter is terrifying and heartbreaking.

Thirty-seven year old Michala Pyke and her boyfriend, John Rytting, have been charged with counts of child cruelty and drug possession after the death of Pyke’s four-year-old daughter, Poppy.

Poppy died of cardiac arrest in June 2013 at Rytting’s home. An autopsy revealed that the little girl had drugs like heroin, ketamine, methadone, and diazepam in her system.

Text messages recovered between Pyke and Rytting made multiple references to “blue smarties” being given to the girl before she went to sleep. The real drug being referenced was diazepam.

It is believed the couple began drugging the little girl once she started interfering with their love life. Pyke would often refer to her daughter as an inconvenience to her relationship.

A search of Rytting’s home turned up large quantities of prescription drugs and controlled substances, many of which were sitting within the child's reach.

Rytting is also facing charges of possessing cannabis with the intent to sell, as well as two counts of importing and two counts of supplying drugs.

While the drugs were not proven to be the cause of Poppy’s death, their presence does not help the couple’s case.

Pyke also admitted to hitting the child after bruises were found all over her body. At this time, no verdict has been reached in the case.

I really don't understand how any mother could put her love life before her own daughter, let alone resort to drugging the child to get some alone time.
