This Handmade Jewelry Is Beautiful By Day, But At Night, It Becomes Extraordinary

Laura Caseley is a New York-based writer, artist, and illustrator. When she's not writing and researching for ViralNova, you can find her working on an art project or enjoying a good cup of tea.

Hungarian painter and ceramicist Bogi Fabian creates a little bit of magic in her studios in Hungary and Vienna, Austria. She makes jewelry from scratch, designing and building the pendants and then embellishing them with glazes and paints — and light.

With the lights on, Fabian's studio, where she carefully crafts pendants and other jewelry, looks like any other ceramics studio.

But turn off the lights and something magical starts happening. Do you see it?

Fabian chooses various images and symbols to design for her pieces, all with the hope of inspiring peace and happiness in its wearers. She uses handmade, glowing pigments to create radiant and colorful designs. The colors are also all hand-mixed for each piece, so no two are ever completely alike. The color mixing, Fabian explains, is part of a desire to make each piece as unique as possible.

By day, the pieces look earthy and organic, resembling stones, shells, and other natural items. Their subtle coloring makes them understated accessories.

But at night, their wild sides come out with a rainbow of glowing colors.

The glowing aspect is also part of Fabian's concept. While the jewelry may look unassuming to many, each piece has the capacity to shine brightly -- just like the person wearing it.

Fabian also creates sculptural pieces like this one.

"The real character of each piece shows up in the dark, when the astonishing colors [light up] and invite the wearer of the jewelry to dream," Fabian explains. By night, the jewelry can shine and give the person "an inner peace, because it is such a soft light the wearer [can] forget their all day life for a moment and sink into another world of dreams and inspiration."

This pendant does double duty with colored glaze visible by day, and glowing components visible by night.

The glow-in-the-dark pigments recharge when exposed to light, just like the stars you had on your ceiling as a kid, so they'll glow night after night.

Fabian works in the dark when adding the glowing pigments to ensure they look right.

Her studio is a work of art itself!

Aside from jewelry, Fabian also creates large, glowing murals and paintings, as well as body paintings. You can see many more of Fabian's pieces on her website and Facebook page. If you're interested in a glowing piece of your own, you can also check out her shop.
