In the Dutch province of Friesland, fierljeppen is a national sport. Essentially, the name means "far leaping," and it involves jumping bodies of water, most commonly canals.

Participants use a long pole with a plate on the bottom to propel themselves forward and over the canal, much like a pole vaulter.
