This Tiny Island In Mexico Will Haunt My Dreams Forever. How It Got Like This Is Horrifying.
JANUARY 31, 2014
There is a small island located south of Mexico City, between the canals of Xochimico, that is one of the saddest, creepiest tourist destinations you'll ever find. It's called The Island of the Dolls (Isla de las Muñecas). It was never meant to be a tourist attraction, but now people from far and wide travel to see it. And I can see why.
Mutilated dolls hang from trees all over the island.
As you could imagine, the legend behind the dolls is tragic.
It's said that many years ago, a small girl drowned there under mysterious circumstances.
Now, her spirit possesses the many dolls that are hanging around the island.
The truth is, the caretaker of the island, Don Julian Santana Barrera, DID find a little girl drowning and was unable to save her life.
It is said he found a doll floating in the water after the tragedy and hung it up in a tree as a way to honor the girl's memory.
And he has been adding dolls ever since.
Some people don't believe the caretaker's story.
For 50 years, Julian hung dolls in trees in honor of lost little girls.
One day he, too, was found drowned.
Now, all the remains are memories and hundreds of these lonesome dolls.
It's hard to say whether the drowned girl and the caretaker legend is true. Either way, the Island of the Dolls is one of the creepiest places you can ever visit. I suggest you don't go at night. Via amusingplanet This is the kind of story you could share around a campfire. Or on Facebook below.
